Live Free or Spy: A tale of common sense privacy legislation in New Hampshire
Speaker
Jason Hennessey
Abstract
Did you know that all of the major mobile phone providers in the US sold (and maybe sell) your realtime location with no way to opt out short of enabling airplane mode? When Jason found this out, it upset him so much that he sought legislation in his home state of New Hampshire to protect the privacy of citizens. Over 3 years, he worked with legislators on two privacy frameworks to outlaw the practice without explicit consent, facing off with lobbyists representing multi-billion dollar telecom companies.
This talk will discuss some of the technical background about the info telecoms sold (and maybe sell) about their customers, the privacy legislation and the responses of the telecoms.
